If I close doors of my house and do not allow the air inside to go out, I also prevent outside air from coming in. Do I gain or lose thereby? My self-interest lies in opening the doors of my house. Thereby whatever belongs to me becomes common property of the world and whatever belongs to the world becomes mine. Real self-interest lies in caring for the society. Society, a form of the Lord, will also then care for us.

The philosophy of Sarvodaya is, on the whole, harmonising and synthesising, which means that it is capable of bringing together and reconciling different thoughts. Syncretism is deeply etched on the Indian psyche. It can reach its logical end through Sarvodaya. Sarvodaya cannot be in opposition to anyone. But it is certainly opposed to all those who seek the good of a particular caste or class and believe that some people should have pre-eminence and should hold power, to the exclusion of others.

We are not attached to and proud of any particular country. We do not insist on following any particular religion. We are not tied to any sect or caste. Roaming freely in the garden of noble thoughts in the whole world constitutes our study. Assimilating noble thoughts and making them our own is our sacred duty. Harmonising and synthesizing different characteristics and developing a global vision constitutes our ideological quest.

Some people say that if we remain firm on truth and non-violence when our opponent is taking recourse to untruth and violence, we stand to lose. They do not argue why we should eat when our opponent is hungry; for they know that whosoever eats would become strong. They accept unilateral eating, but not unilateral love. This means we have placed initiative in the hands of the opponent. This is a cowardly stand, which creates a vicious circle. We must have courage to break that circle.
